Acne is common
Up to 85 per cent of Australians will develop acne during their life, with approximately 5 per cent experiencing severe acne. Almost half of men and women continue to experience acne into their thirties [R].
Whilst there are many treatments available, many of them are not effective and contain harmful chemicals that can be absorbed directly into the body. The reduction of acne can also reduce the risk of developing acne scars. Moreover, those with sensitive skin may find common ingredients in acne treatments (benzoyl peroxide & salicylic acid) can be excessively drying on skin or cause irritation.
Many dermatologists and acne sufferers are now turning towards a natural yet effective way to fight these conditions with one of the most successful products derived from the sea buckthorn plant.
How is acne caused?
Acne occurs when there is a change in production of oil (sebum) in the skin and the flow of sebum to the skin surface [R].
The build up of sebum in the pores can cause inflammation and eventually form into a pimple. Breakouts tend to develop in areas that have the most sebum producing pores in the skin.

Birth of a pimple: A whitehead, for example, is formed when the normal flow of sebum is blocked, causing sebum to build up behind the blockage, which forms a swelling and eventually protrudes up into the skin [R]
Research has shown sea buckthorn softens and strengthens the skin and reduces, scaring, swelling and inflammation, allowing the skin to finally break the inflammatory cycle and heal itself. Sea buckthorn oil has also been shown to decrease oily skin by 45% in a 2019 study [R], which is vital for reducing the formation of acne.
Sea buckthorn is one of the most nutrient dense plants in the world containing over 190 skin enhancing nutrients that have been proven to help the skin repair itself from acne and scaring and boost collagen production. There is a reason sea buckthorn oil has been used for centuries as one of the best solutions for acne and healing other skin ailments.
